Expressing Gratitude: Beyond the Dinner Table
Nov 27, 2024Feeling thankful? Here’s how to share that gratitude with others.
I’ve always appreciated the generosity of spirit during this time of year. When I worked at the Nashville Rescue Mission, I saw hundreds of turkeys and food donated to help the unhoused. I’ve seen families come together with a desire to serve meals to the poor or give much needed supplies to women in the rehabilitation shelters. I love projects like Thanksgiving distributions by Second Harvest and various community churches throughout the Nashville and surrounding areas. It’s not simply the act of giving food, it’s the comradery, the well-wishes and thankfulness surrounding the event. The volunteers appreciate all the donations given by the organization and community, and those in need appreciate the food and the volunteers’ time.
For many, Thanksgiving kicks off the Holiday season. While we enjoy feasts, Black Friday and gifts at the Hannukah candles or around Christmas trees, just a reminder that gratitude can extend beyond the dinner table or living room.
Acts of Kindness
Acts of kindness start a chain reaction of love in big and small ways. Something as simple as baking treats for friends or offering to listen can make a big impact. Giving a compliment or sharing a favorite memory can also express appreciation. Each of these actions helps strengthen bonds and brings joy to both the giver and receiver.
There are many practical ways to show gratitude throughout the season.
- Volunteer at local shelters.
- Donate to your favorite charity.
- Donate clothing or food to those in need.
- Help your neighbors with errands.
- Write thank-you notes to those who have made a difference in your life this past year.
- Donate to a local church’s ministry event whether you are affiliated with the church or not.
Many people drive by a church in their community. Most churches have some type of ministry available during the holiday season whether it’s an angel tree, a food shelter, or helping a local school have additional resources. Community engagement promotes connection and enhances joy.
Mindful Appreciation
It is in my experience that practicing gratitude should not be limited to just one day. Cultivating appreciation daily can lead to a more fulfilling life. Strategies include:
- Journaling: Write down three things you’re grateful for each day.
- Meditation: Spend a few minutes reflecting on what you cherish.
Experts emphasize the benefits of daily gratitude, noting that it reduces stress and enhances happiness.
Strengthening Relationships
Expressing gratitude strengthens bonds with family and friends. Here are some tips for showing appreciation:
- Write heartfelt notes.
- Share memories that make you smile.
- Plan a fun activity together.
Taking the time to show you care fosters deeper connections and enriches relationships.
As Thanksgiving approaches, Wisdom Tree Collective extends heartfelt wishes to everyone celebrating this special time of year.
