Palm Sunday: The Forest Path

Reflection Point:

“All that is gold does not glitter,

Not all those who wander are lost.”

—J.R.R. Tolkien

Scripture:

“They took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’” (John 12:13)

Wisdom from a Mystic:

“God doesn’t lead all by one path, and perhaps the one who thinks she is walking along a very lowly path is in fact higher in the eyes of the Lord.”

—St. Teresa of Avila, The Way of Perfection, 17.2

“To come to the knowledge you have not,

You must go by a way in which you know not…

To come to be what you are not

You must go by a way in which you are not..”

—St. John of the Cross, Ascent of Mount Carmel I.13.11

You have grown tall. But even trees sway. This day remembers the joy of celebration, the paradox of praise that soon turns to suffering. What happens when we walk the sacred path, knowing it will include both celebration and crucifixion?

Palm Sunday is the road into the city. It is the threshold of transformation. What within you is walking forward in trust? What is asking to be seen, welcomed, named?

Practice:

Create a prayer to the Sacred about your path. Use palms or branches, real or drawn, and place them as a symbol of your surrender and celebration.

Fasting:

What expectations need to be laid down to truly walk the path before you?

Giving:

What encouragement or blessing can you offer another traveler today?
